Duke of Brunswick Room

This room honours King George III of the United Kingdom, the reigning monarch when the Bailey House was built. The King had numerous titles, including Duke of Brunswick (German: Herzog von Braunschweig und Lüneburg) due to his holdings in Germany. The Province of New Brunswick was named after him. Prince Edward would have become Duke of Brunswick, had he become king, but instead the Brunswick title passed to King George III’s fourth son, Prince Ernest Augustus.

The Duke of Brunswick room is filled with genuine 17th, 18th and 19th century portraits of the many relations of the Duke of Brunswick. These include paintings of Prince William I of Orange, Count Henry Casimir of Nassau-Dietz and Margrave Frederick of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. We also have many original photographs of later members of the Brunswick family on display. The room has period furnishing with a nod to the Duke of Brunswick’s German and Dutch connections.
