The town was established by French settlers under the leadership of Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons, and Samuel de Champlain. Over the centuries, Annapolis Royal has played a significant role in the colonial history of North America, witnessing numerous conflicts between French, British, and First Nations forces.
